As a single mother, you have a lot on your plate and a great deal to worry about. Getting out for an evening among adults – or even going out on a bona fide date! – might be the last thing on your mind. If you do think about going out, you might begin to wonder how you can afford a pretty new dress for the special evening, or if you could possibly afford to go Dutch. When the budget is tight, you are the first thing that falls to the wayside.
Don’t let your finances keep you from going out once in a while. There are a few simple ways to keep the costs to a minimum and enjoy time out with a special someone. You don’t have to break the budget to make it happen!
Consider a “wandering” date. Take a walk through the park, visit the beach for a relaxing afternoon, or make a date to hike through the woods. Make your date a deal: You will pack the lunches if he will drive you both to the destination. For the price of gas and a few lunch meat sandwiches, you have a date with a special man and the bonus of getting closer to nature.
Check out your newspaper for events happening in your area. Readings at your local bookstore are always a popular date – you and your date can discuss what you heard over a cup of coffee later. Free concerts are often given by artists hoping to promote their new albums, and you might even be able to find a free community movie night. Pop the popcorn at home to save even more money.
Go to yard sales together. Doesn’t sound like much fun? Wait until you try it! Unusual items or things that remind you of your childhood will spark lively conversation. You will meet new people, spend unique time together and get to know each other in a way that might not have been possible on a “traditional” kind of date.
Try out a wine-tasting. Venture to a winery and take the free tour. Learn all about how wine is made, then retreat to the tasting room to sample the wares. It’s a great conversation starter, and you learn something new. Pack a picnic lunch and spring for a bottle of inexpensive wine before you leave the winery, and you have bona fide date!
Volunteer together. Do you both love animals? Visit your local animal shelter and love on the furry souls there. Do you both enjoy helping those less fortunate? Volunteer a lunchtime date at a soup kitchen. Join up with others who are volunteering for special days at domestic abuse shelters or the Red Cross. Not only will you have a great date to talk about later, you will feel good about helping others at the same time.
Dating on a budget might actually be more fun than dating when money is no object. The point is getting to know the person you are spending time with – and any of these dates can help you do just that!

Don’t let a lack of funds keep you from having romantic dates with your spouse. By using your imagination, you can add some fun and excitement to your marriage even on a limited budget. Here are 12 ideas to get you started:
1. Go out for a burger and fries and take in a movie at a nearby dollar theater.
2. Put the children to bed early and give each other an all over body massage using warm body oil or lotion.
3. Have a picnic in the park. After you eat, lay on a blanket and watch the clouds.
4. Turn your living room into a theater. Dim the lights and eat buttered popcorn as you watch a movie.
5. Plan a camping trip. If your children are going with you, you may want to provide them with their own tent so you can enjoy some privacy.
6. Put your children at a sitter’s house for the night and have a romantic date at home. Get dressed up and enjoy a candlelight dinner.
7. Play an exciting board game- preferably one for couples.
8. Create a romantic retreat. Change the look and feel of your bedroom by using different colored light bulbs, candles, flowers, and extra pillows on the bed. Bring in some food and have a date in your bedroom.
9. Take advantage of the free music concerts or festivals offered in your city.
10. Pack a lunch and go for a bike ride. When you get tired, stop and have a picnic.
11. Plan a romantic evening at home. Before the date, each spouse can go shopping in a department or dollar store and spend $5 or $10 on things to make the evening special.
12. Go out for lunch rather than dinner. Often, restaurants will charge more for dinner than lunch. You can save even more by drinking water and skipping dessert.
You can have fun in your relationship even when you don’t have the money to go on expensive dates. Use this list to spark your own ideas and do something fun with your spouse today.
